Commentary: the euro both deepens and widens the single market
Article Abstract:
The European market cannot be perceived as a true single market without a single European currency, the euro, and it appears likely the euro will be introduced on Jan 1 1999 as planned. The management of the proposed central European bank is causing some dispute among member states, however, particularly as the central bank is likely to focus more on inflation than employment. European Monetary Union has successfully harmonized many of the member states' inflation rates and stabilized the economies of others. East European countries are basing their economic policies on the EU's.

Commentary: the success of the euro is not enough
Article Abstract:
The introduction of the single European currency has highlighted a number of urgent issues. These include the European Union budget, which will come under increasing strain as the European Union is enlarged, and the need to establish regulations on fair competition in relation to taxation and state subsidies. The single European currency has also made the euro area a key participant in the world economy, and European Union economic policies can no longer be merely an internal matter.

Commentary: The euro and unemployment-high stakes for all concerned
Article Abstract:
Financial markets have shown some confidence in the new euro in the progression towards economic and monetary union (EMU), and it is likely the euro will be a strong currency. However labour markets will need to be adapted so they can function more effectively in some parts of the EU. Whether or not EMU will be a success will depend on whether it can keep both unemployment and inflation down.
