Documentation with legs: online help gives flexibility

Documentation for the legal desktop and for user applications still appears in the form of reference manuals, but although paper is not completely gone, online help is increasingly popular because of its flexibility for production, delivery, searchability and usage. Today's documentation typically needs to be portable to different formats and platforms. Print Access Dir of Documentation and Curriculum Susan Hendel describes her company's basic model for handling both print and online documentation.

SharkTank.com is an example of legal exchange, a type of Web-based business that has emerged during the year 2000. About a half dozen exchanges are now in operation, providing potential clients with lawyers' credentials and fee proposals. Such online organizations usually recommend a meeting after an initial contact and prior to engaging counsel. A list of legal exchanges is provided, with Web addresses and information about fees and target clients.
