Environment report
Article Abstract:
The European Commission is paying close attention to the potential problems and opportunities concerning environmental issues following the proposed enlargement of the European Union. The EU is likely to adopt a more flexible stance on environmental law following enlargement and partial compliance with environmental law may be acceptable for new members. The EU remains committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, however, and believes reductions of 15% by 2010 from 1990 levels can be reached if other countries participate. Concerns on energy, air quality, waste and water have also been addressed.

Article Abstract:
The new European Union (EU) environemnt commissioner is Margot Wallstrom from Sweden. She is seen as uncompromising as a negotiator and fast at learning, though the Greens are concerned about her lack of experience in environmental issues. The Finnish presidency of the EU started in Jul 1999, and Satu Hassi, Finnish environment minister, has set out the Finnish presidency's agenda, which includes a stress on measures to combat cliamte change. The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) is concerned about the German presidency's record to Jun 30 1999, when the presidency ended.
