Jr. Partner adds calendaring from court rules
Article Abstract:
Millennium Software's Jr. Partner Plus legal case management application has many great features but its omission of an online tutorial is disappointing. The program is available for Windows 3.1, 95 and NT and costs $999 for a single workstation, $1,499 for a three-user network version and $200 for each additional user. Jr. Partner Plus includes a RoadMap feature that enables users to customize and automate standard yet complex case and event activities. The RoadMap automatic rule-based event scheduler allows users to schedule activities based on any user-set parameters such as office procedures and local court rules. Attorneys can use RoadMap to schedule depositions, for example, and the program can automatically schedule related appointments such as prepare notes, meet with client and confirm court reporter. RoadMap, however, is time consuming to set up. Jr. Partner Plus is also expensive compared to office software suites that are abundantly available for $200 and up.

Conquering taxing calculations
Article Abstract:
TimeValue Software's $149 TaxInterest tax preparation software performs sophisticated calculations to determine penalties and interest due on tax overpayments and underpayments. The program comes with many state and federal tax rate schedules, and users specify which rate table to use in addition to entering the amount of tax due and the payments to be made. After all the information is entered, TaxInterest automatically determines the interest or penalty due. It can also create documentation that explains how the final amount was determined. The program supports complicated special tax rules, including the GATT overpayment rule and the 'Hot' interest underpayment rule. TaxInterest can also monitor interest due on refunds and penalties. The online tutorial and help are excellent, and the program offers specialized reports.

Calendar using court rules
Article Abstract:
Alex Systems' $395 Legalex calendaring application integrates jurisdiction timelines with local court events. Timelines for many California jurisdictions and for over 20 additional states are available for both superior and municipal courts. Timelines for other courts including bankruptcy, federal, district and family law are also available. Legalex features a familiar interface that tracks daily appointments and creates to-do lists. Legalex also includes a password security system for each network user and an audit trail to track all calendar changes. Legalex can customize court calculations to reflect holidays and weekends, and the package can be adapted to agree with client/matter coding schemes.
