Losing its allure; lawyer/legislators are a dying breed. It just doesn't pay
Article Abstract:
It is proving to be too difficult for lawyers to maintain their practices and be state legislators as well. so many are no longer running for election. A 1986 survey of the 50 states by the National Conference of State Legislatures showed that 16% of state legislators were lawyers, down from 20% in 1979 and 22% in 1976. The survey also showed that in 43 state legislatures the number of attorneys has been decreasing since 1976. Reasons cited by attorneys for leaving public service vary. One is that stricter ethics laws make being a lawyer-legislator less conducive to business contacts. Another is that legislative work is becoming too time-consuming.

Minor candidates who are lawyers include Larry Agran, Nancy Lord and vice-presidential candidate Endicott Peabody. Agran, formerly mayor of Irvine, CA, hopes that he will gain the status of 'major' candidate now that he has finished ahead of Jerry Brown in a poll. Lawyer Ralph Nader is waging a write-in campaign.
