Verdicts; the big numbers of 1998
Article Abstract:
A survey of the largest jury verdicts in 1998 shows two legal malpractice verdicts were some of the largest, medical malpractice and antitrust awards also increased significantly, in fact, jury awards in almost every category of litigation showed a significant increase. These verdicts do seem to be impermanent, as the high verdicts do not survive post-trial motions and the appellate process, and such post-verdict adjustment of awards has gone up in every year since 1990. Verdicts are divided into subject areas, significant reductions and settlements also have their own sections.
