Pastoral privilege debated; archdiocese and prosecutor battle over priest sexual abuse files
Article Abstract:
The Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago and the Cook County, IL prosecutor are in a dispute over the meaning of pastoral privilege. A Jun 1992 archdiocese report on clergy sexual abuse of minors was alleged to contain some incident reports the prosecutor had never heard about. The Cook County prosecutor subpoenaed some of these records, but the Archdiocese maintains some of them are covered by the pastoral privilege. Whether the pastoral privilege pertains just to confessions from church members to clergy or also to priests pursuing complaints against other priests is the matter at issue.

Miscarriage of justice? An Idaho prosecutor charges pregnant, unmarried teens and their adult boyfriends with sex crimes
Article Abstract:
Demonstrations by a pregnant teenager against her prosecution by Idaho prosecutor Douglas Varie under the state's 1921 fornication law drew national press attention and criticism about his selective enforcement of the law, only using it against underaged teenagers in consensual relationships about which there had been no complaint. One ACLU attorney felt the state should not get involved in family affairs.

Walsh defends probe; urges ABA House to back renewal of special prosecutor law
Article Abstract:
Iran-Contra special prosecutor Lawrence Walsh told the 1993 ABA Midyear Meeting that the pardon of Caspar Weinberger and five other former government officials showed presidents cannot be trusted to deal with wrongdoing in their administrations. He argued that this proved the need to renew the Independent Counsel Act. Walsh also responded to charges of his arrogance and lack of accountability.
