Profession's ideals were put to test; year's events
Article Abstract:
The 1991 to 1992 year was an eventful one for the ABA. After the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and other East European countries, the association instituted the Central and East European Law Initiative (CEELI). Through CEELI, volunteer lawyers helped many of these countries develop new legal systems. The public dismay at the Rodney King verdict and Los Angeles riots spurred the ABA to form its Task Force on Minorities and the Justice System. Encouraging pro bono legal service and improving legal education were among the other issues on the ABA agenda in 1991 and 1992.

Correcting a deficit in justice; shared burden
Article Abstract:
There is a crisis in the US judicial system, and the symptoms include budget cuts, layoffs of court employees, and court congestion and delay. This information comes from a report by the ABA's Special Committee on Funding the Justice System released in Aug 1992. In 1992 and 1993 the ABA will address ways to improve the US justice system and effect equal access to justice for all. A national coalition composed mostly of non-lawyers will publicize the efforts of ABA entities to achieve these two goals.

The association's outgoing president assesses the problems
Article Abstract:
There is a lack of access to the American justice system for those most in need of access, and the ABA is trying to correct this state of affairs. One of its efforts is the Working Group on the Unmet Legal Needs of Children and Their Families, which has issued a reform agenda for improving conditions for poor children. Another is the Coalition for Justice, which has members from inside and outside the legal community and hopes to develop recommendations for improving the administration of justice.
