The Supreme Court ruling in Cooper Industries, Inc. v. Leatherman Tool Group requiring de novo review of punitive damage verdicts by appellate courts is discussed. Standards on punitive reviews are expected to change in state as well as federal court.

Intellectual property and corporate law are in a tie as the legal specialties most in demand, the latter because of the thriving US economy and the move towards consolidation throughout US industry, which has created great demand for lawyers with experience in mergers and acquisitions, securities, and any form of transactional work. Recruiters see no end to the demand for intellectual property lawyers in the foreseeable future, but that for corporate attorneys will probably cool once the merger hyperactivity subsides.
