Reporters' promise held enforceable
Article Abstract:
The Minnesota Supreme Court has ruled that the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspapers must pay $200,000 in damages to an advertising executive, Dan Cohen, who lost his job after leaking information about a gubernatorial candidate. The court decided on Jan 23, 1992 that the newspapers should not have identified Cohen as their source after promising him confidentiality and were therefore liable for his loss of employment. Never before has journalistic confidentiality has been ruled enforceable.

Military counsel fight command; up in arms over civilian putsch
Article Abstract:
Military lawyers are voicing concern about a Pentagon directive giving the Defense Department's civilian General Counsel control over the judge advocates general and military justice. Major General John L. Fugh stated that the judge advocate general has statutory authority to render legal advice to the Secretary of Defense and administer the Judge Advocates General Corps and that Congress intended this official to be independent so that he could advise Defense Department secretaries in a nonpolitical way.

'No choice,' she kills self and daughter
Article Abstract:
New York attorney Marcia Rimland killed herself and her four-year-old daughter rather than permit visitation by an ex-husband she suspects of sexual abuse. A family court had ruled that there was insufficient evidence of sexual abuse and ordered that unsupervised visitation take place. Friends of the ex-husband claim that Rimland was an unbalanced, controlling woman, while her friends say she was worn down by an insensitive judicial system.
