Rewards in diversity: conference showcases minority-opportunity programs at businesses, law firms
Article Abstract:
The ABA sponsored conference on The Power of Diversity: Leveraging the Challenge of Change explored the need for and current efforts by law firms and businesses promoting diversity in the workplace. One executive found that an ethnically diverse team was better at problem solving and so encouraged diversity in all levels of the company. Some companies such as BankAmerica found the diversity in the available workforce automatically diversified its employees. However, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chair Gilbert F. Casellas reported a smaller budget and a heavier caseload for 1995.

"Good girl" litigators; survey concludes female lawyers avoid histrionics at trial
Article Abstract:
A survey by Metricus Inc of ABA Section of Litigation members on the effect of gender on courtroom performance found that female attorneys are less likely to use risky, histrionic techniques during trial. Those who did try such techniques reported less success than male attorneys. Ignoring hostility, courtesy to witnesses, evidencing intellect and using humor were techniques which worked for women. Results in the survey differed according to gender, indicating that both sexes suspect the other of using their gender to advantage during trial.

A second, subdued meeting; a less combative Dan Quayle talks with ABA litigators about legal reform
Article Abstract:
Dan Quayle brought his campaign for civil justice reform to the ABA again this fall. Quayle pushed his Council on Competitiveness' 50-point proposal for reform, and was better received than he was in August. The plan would establish ceilings on punitive damages and make the losers in diversity jurisdiction cases pay fees. ABA President Talbot D'Alemberte criticized Quayle's claim that his plan will improve court access, saying it would do the opposite.
