Stars and bars wars; confederate flag-wavers, many of them students, storm the courts under a banner of free expression
Article Abstract:
Cases claiming than bans on exhibiting the Confederate flag also limit free expression are discussed. Much of the debate has happened in secondary schools where administrators have banned displaying the flag and disciplined students who did so.

Pen pals; court to rule on free speech in the hoosegow when one inmate helps another with legal claims
Article Abstract:
The pending Supreme Court case of Shaw v. Murphy, claiming that prison officials violated a prisoner's free speech rights when they disciplined him for acting as a jailhouse lawyer, is discussed. Other recent restrictions on prisoner rights include the Prisoner Litigation Reform Act, limiting the number of suits an inmate can file.

Rulings by two federal appeals courts that disability-based harassment is barred by the Americans with Disabilities Act are discussed. The 5th Circuit ruling, Flowers v. Southern Regional Physician Services Inc, and the 4th Circuit one, Fox v. General Motors Corp, both came in 2001.
