Taming the paper beast: Seven top Windows programs compared head-to-head in five key categories
Article Abstract:
Windows-based litigation support software helps lawyers discover and analyze facts and manage cases. CAT-Links' popular $95 CAT-Links transcript management program lacks database functionality, but offers an attractive and intuitive interface. It includes fast and easy search and query tools, and an excellent voice integration tool. Also missing is an imaging utility, although it is a good choice for those who only need transcript management facilities. KDH Technology Group's $1,750 Manage_Well is more full featured and sophisticated, yet still just as easy to use. It focuses on managing documents and includes a strong set of research and presentation tools. Summation Legal Technologies' $1,695 Summation Blaze 4.2 integrates full-text and database facilities, with a strong full-text search engine and indexing tool that allows fuzzy searching. The database features are somewhat limited, and performance is slow.

Cyber justice
Article Abstract:
Choosing appropriate automated litigation support (ALS) software involves deciding what needs to be accomplished and then looking for the best software product to achieve the defined objective. ALS using computing and communications technologies to analyze, index and summarize data, rendering the data accessible for preparation during discovery or trial. ALS, which once was thought of as computerized management of depositions and exhibits produced in connection with discovery requests, is now generally regarded as any automated legal function, including indexing databases or reviewing images, or even outsourcing document assembly, calendaring or online research to an application service provider (ASP). ALS software products and services are identified and briefly described, and are grouped into five groups: Full-Text Search; Imaging; Integrated Programs; Trial Systems; and ASP Portals.
