The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act as the reason for the increase in securities class action suits is discussed. The act was drafted to decrease frivolous securities fraud suits, but increased corporate accounting fraud could also be leading to increased suits.

Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court ruling in New York Times v. Tasini on the copyright violation of freelance writers' work is discussed. According to Tasini, the reproduction in electronic databases of freelance writers' articles contributed to a collective work such as a newspaper violate s. 201(c) of the Copyright Act.

The article discusses Tasini v. The New York Times Co., a US Court of Appeals for the 2d Circuit ruling dealing with the cooyright for compiled works. The court held that newspaper and magazine publishers publishing works by free-lance writers in their hard-copy editions may not include such works in electronic versions of the editions without obtaining permission from the writers.
