Ten tools for the road warrior
Article Abstract:
Attorneys faced with mounting challenges to be effective telecommuters must consider hardware first when setting up remote offices. They must select the fastest notebook computer with the most memory and hard drive space that they can afford. Attorneys should also pay close attention to both keyboard layout and pointing devices when evaluating notebooks. Active matrix screens are also essential additions for lawyers intending to use their notebooks for client or opposing counsel presentations. Despite computer manufacturer promises of longer battery life, users should remember to plug-in their computers whenever possible, and they should always try to keep a fully charged battery on hand. Users in need of printers can either rely on full-service hotels' business centers or on HP's and Canon's portable bubble jet printers. Telecommuting lawyers can also use PC Cards for increased functionality and cellular telephones for faxes, e-mail and online research.

DOS forms creation package
Article Abstract:
Lawyer Forms' Lawyer Forms for Bankruptcy features major limitations that make it an unsuitable bankruptcy software alternative. The package is available in a single user version for $395 and in a network version for $795. Despite its extensive array of standard features, Lawyer Forms for Bankruptcy is available only in DOS and it lacks WYSIWYG functionality. The program takes a prohibitive amount of time to print forms that feature proper bankruptcy court formats and font styles. In fact, these forms take typically between seven and fifteen minutes to print. The application also lacks the capabilities to automatically perform all necessary form calculations. Lawyer Forms for Bankruptcy is simple to navigate, its User Manual is comprehensive and easy to follow, and Lawyer Forms promises to be developing a Windows 95 version of the program. The program's defects, however, far outweigh its positive attributes.

No conflicts here
Article Abstract:
Tremco Legal Solutions' ConflictSearch legal practice management software helps attorneys protect themselves against conflicts of interest. The program replaces manual conflict checking methods with ease and reliability and costs $329 for up to three timekeepers, plus $99 for each additional user. ConflictSearch performs rapid cross-reference checks of database information such as client names, attorneys and law firms. This cross-checking is performed by ConflictSearch's fast, proprietary search engine. The application can also use all existing ODBC-compliant database file information to perform conflict checks. ConflictSearch allows for additional searching in external information centers such as Dun & Bradstreet via Internet and online database links. The program features an excellent family tree function that distinguishes parent, subsidiary and affiliate relationships.
