A dramatic irony
Article Abstract:
ITV has been placing strong emphasis on drama programming, and this approach has begun to attract the attention of the Independent Television Commission. This organization reports that ITV broadcast 26% more drama in 1997 than in 1993, mainly as a result of giving more airtime to soap operas. ITV mainly uses first-run drama series to ensure that its share of peaktime audiences remains larger than that of BBC1. Some observers believe that ITV should now try to allocate more airtime to comedy.
