Electromagnetic pulse and its effects
Article Abstract:
A special committee was appointed by the American Medical Association to investigate the affect of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) on US hospitals. EMP is caused by gamma radiation, a type of radiation that is released when a thermonuclear weapon explodes. EMP in the form of electromagnetic waves can be destructive. Any type of conductor such as a antenna tower, telephone and power lines, buried pipes and metal fences can collect EMP in the form of electromagnetic waves. Electrical currents induced by the waves could damage sensitive electronic components of different types of equipment. In a hospital, electronic devices for monitoring life support systems, laboratory equipment, computers, communication systems and emergency power-generating systems could be damaged by EMP. Hospitals should take measures to prevent this type of damage to important equipment.
