Young at heart
Article Abstract:
Head of children's commissioning for BBC TV Roy Thompson has an annual budget of 55 million pounds sterling. The BBC wants to stay in the forefront of children's programming and is keen to commission shows made in England rather than using imports. Scottish Television Enterprises (STE) controller of entertainment Sandy Ross sees room for more animated book adaptions and children's comedy dramas. Director of Byker Grove, Peter Murphy, is also an advocate of children's comedy and animation. Flextech TV, which runs The Children's Channel (TCC) and Trouble on satellite and cable, aims its programming at older children.

Doing community service
Article Abstract:
Channel 4 plans to start broadcasting its new television program The Feel Good Factor in Aug 1997. The program features 12 different groups of people living in the UK and allows them to examine their living conditions within a specific theme. Project Controller Jacquie Hughes has some concerns that the series covers too many issues. Wall to Wall Television made the six programs in the series at a cost of 500,000 pounds sterling. The programs last for 30 minutes each and cover such topics as education, leisure and crime. Mark Little presents the series which was filmed over a six week period.

Looking on the light side
Article Abstract:
The most successful producers of light entertainment television programmes in the UK are those who can consistently show energy and enthusiasm. They must have a very highly developed sense of fun, and must be able to make a successful programme out of a very small idea. Furthermore, they must motivate the production team and work to a strict budget. Leading light entertainment producers include John Kaye Cooper, Guy Freeman and Martin Cunning.
