Article Abstract:
ITV has traditionally been much more successful than BBC1 with peaktime entertainment series. However, this trend was reversed in 1996, when BBC1 accounted for four of the five top series in this category. In the first 11 months of 1996, ITV's average audience share during prime hours was 39.4%, from 40.7% in 1995, while the share held by BBC1 was 34.2%, from 34.3%. BBC1 launched 30 new series intended to recur in 1996, compared with 26 for ITV.
