BC launches 'jewel' in its crown

Broadcast Communications has set up a new unit called Gem to handle consumer marketing and revenue-boosting disciplines. Gem will be headed by Peter Christiansen as the unit's first managing director. Gem will focus on consumer marketing, programme and format sales, and advertiser-related programming. Broadcast Communications chose the name Gem because they believe this unit to be the jewel of the company's operation. Gem has already signed a distributing contract with Live TV to distribute programmes and formats internationally.

Kew documentary blossoms for C4
Article Abstract:
Channel 4 bested a BBC bid to make Garden Doctors program for Kew Gardens, which is the latest of several respected British institutions that welcomed documentary filmmakers. Flashback Television is slated to produce the film series which will be executive produced by David Edgar and series produced by Flashback's Ann Lalic. Channel 4 also hired Flashback to make a third series of Garden Doctors. The project is one of the first moves by Peter Dale, who is the new commissioning editor for documentaries of Channel 4.

Shona gets 13-part BBC 2 entertainment slot
Article Abstract:
BBC2 controller Mark Thompson has commisioned Independent Shona Productions to produce an entertainment program for the network. The 13-part series encompasses a set of shows entitled Uncut Funk, which are scheduled to air at the 11PM slot; and a mellower variant entitled Cut Funk, for which the 6PM slot has been allocated. The shows, which are slated to be broadcast beginning fall-1999, will feature a mix of music videos, interviews, R&B and hip-hop music, animation and comedy sketches.
