In the South - when it mattered to be an editor
Article Abstract:
Newspaper editors were respected in the late 1940s and the 1950s for their bold comments on issues such as racial discrimination, the collapse of white supremacy and politics. Most Southern papers subsisted on the reputation of their editors, whose editorial page was regularly read and analyzed. Southern editors were committed to a high level of professional standards and devoted their writing to the upliftment of the poor and less privileged sections of the society.

Article Abstract:
A national telephone survey of 1,410 US journalists to find the truth in the perception of journalists as 'cultural elites,' touted by Vice President Dan Quayle, confirms that the allegation of media elitism is less truth than exaggeration. A majority of journalists fit the profile of the ordinary citizen in relation to their residence, age, sex, marital status and ideas regarding their functions.

Elite in the eye of the beholder
Article Abstract:
Newsweek senior editor Jonathan Alter's follow-up of Dan Quayle's identification of a cultural elite involved a survey of people's opinion on this class. Forty-nine percent of those polled believed that children were most affected by television. A list that resulted from the survey of those who shaped American culture included actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and media mogul Rupert Murdoch.
