NTL aims to beat rivals to launch interactive TV
Article Abstract:
Cable firm NTL is slated to roll out interactive TV services in March 1998, allowing its subscribers access to banking, shopping, gaming and entertainment facilities. NTL Interactive, which results from two years and GBP40 million worth of development efforts, will be furnished to clients outside the NTL franchise, through a TV set-top box linked to a telephone line. The UK-based NTL is in advanced negotiations with 35 affiliates regarding the upcoming services, including the Press Association, Barclays Bank, Airtours, and Universal Studios. NTL Interactive, which will be at the core of NTL's digital cable initiatives that are scheduled to launch in 1999, will ultimately encompass access to e-mail, Internet, telephony, and digital terrestrial television.

Sky goes one up
Article Abstract:
BSkyB is offering three budget subscription packages, 6.99 pounds sterling, 8.99 pounds sterling and 11.99 pounds sterling, that is said to be more favorable than the packages offered by its major rival On Digital. Sky, which already launched several marketing moves including extensive subsidies on set-top boxes and free digital dish installation before the subscription packages, also announced that its analog service is better that On Digital's planned 15-channel analog service. The recent moves by Sky, which disclosed a marketing budget 60 million pounds sterling, has raised concerns from observers whether it has finally outsmarted its rival.
