News at Ten may go head-to-head with BBC
Article Abstract:
ITV is reportedly reviewing two alternative proposals for its news premier news program, News at Ten. The first proposal is to move News at Ten to a timeslot that could go head-to-head with BBC news at 21.00. The other is keeping the program at its current time slot but shortening it to allow the next program to start promptly at 22.30. If ITV decides to move the program to a new timeslot, it would have to ask approval from the Independent Television Commission. However, if it moves to shorten the program, this could impact to regional news and weather programs that currently run from 22.30 to 22.40.

Pay-TV tussle to control Germany
Article Abstract:
The German media companies Kirch Group and Bertelsmann are competing for control of the pay-TV market in Europe. BSkyB has not yet signed contracts with Kirch, which suggests that BSkyB are waiting to see which company gains control before committing themselves. Kirch launched a digital satellite channel, called DFI, in July 1996 and has been arranging movie deals worth millions of dollars. Kirch also holds a 25% stake in Premier, which is managed by Bertelsmann. Kirch can veto any decisions it disagrees with, and this underpins the power struggle between the two companies.
