Struggle for independents
Article Abstract:
There are some successful television production companies in Manchester, but small independent producers in the north of England are generally facing difficult market conditions. They face strong competition from London-based independent producers, and believe that there are very limited prospects for growth. Independents in the region have been particularly concerned about the success of newcomers such as Zenith North and Barraclough Carey North.

Small screen heroes
Article Abstract:

However private channels may be investing in films that can't be shown for two years as there are theatrical and video windows to be played out. The BBC promotes films theatricaly after their UK TV premieres, and Channel 4 makes films where scheduling is delayed until they have been properly exploited both theatrically and on video.

Less of a lottery: the British film industry has won cash from the National Lottery, but that doesn't mean funding for projects will be handed out indiscriminately
Article Abstract:
The National Lotery has pledged to inject about 10 million pounds sterling into film making. However projects will have to pass eligibility criteria set by the Department of National Heritage, and the Lottery Board is expecting that commercially successful films will provide enough money to be re-invested in the scheme, doubling or trebling the cash available.
