The early birds
Article Abstract:
The growth in children's television is reflected in the number of programmes and buyers at the Mipcom Junior children's programme exhibition held in Cannes. There were 207 buyer and 557 programmes in 1993 when the event was first launched. The expected figures for 1997 are 301 buyers with 597 programmes. Holding the event two days before the main Mipcom show means children's specialists take longer to view and choose programmes. Distributors have to pay a registration fee for each event they attend and this has been a cause for complaint.

Reality TV: the premier league
Article Abstract:
There are a number of very popular television programmes in the UK that rely on real-life footage. BBC Documentaries' 'Video Diaries' and 'Video Nation' series encourage viewers to make their own programmes, an approach which can create problems when vulnerable people are filmed. Carlton's 'Police Camera Action!' for ITV uses footage from police cameras, while Folio's 'Crime Beat' for BBC1 uses footage from closed circuit television cameras.

Reality check on transatlantic TV
Article Abstract:
Television programmes in the UK tend to be divorced from reality. There is a strong focus on historical drama, and even current affairs programmes seem somehow not to belong to the real world. This contrasts strongly with the situation in the US, where there is strong interest in even the most extreme details of real life. News programmes in the US present tragedies in an upbeat way, while many programmes use real videotape footage.
