Transitions - a regional summary: a country-by-country review of the media and press freedom in former Warsaw Pact nations since 1989
Article Abstract:
Criminal libel laws are still used in Central and Eastern European countries to make it dangerous for journalists to express negative views about their governments. Journalists have faced many challenges in the second half of the 1990s, including defining the purpose of journalism itself. In Hungary, there was early proliferation and privatization of media after the government relaxed censorship of the press in 1988, but the state monopoly on national broadcasting was not broken until Jul 1997. In Poland, a relatively stable media foundation has been created.

Civil society and the spirit of 1989: lessons for journalism, from East to West
Article Abstract:
It is important to consider the ideas that were important in Eastern Europe before and after the collapse of communism in order to learn valuable lessons about today's struggle for democracy and the journalism undertaken in its name. In particular, attention must be given to the importance of 'civil society,' a concept that paved the way for the revival of democracy in Eastern Europe. The efforts of journalists to promote democracy can only make sense when civil society makes sense as a field of action.

Poisonous neglect: environmental issues are undercovered in Central and Eastern Europe
Article Abstract:
There has been very little media coverage of environmental issues in Central and Eastern Europe, even though some countries in this region now have relatively independent media. The main reason for this is that concern for the economy is often placed ahead of environmental issues. Media coverage of environmental issues tends to be fullest in countries where the environmental movement is relatively well established, such as Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.
