Afghanistan's first elected President Hamid Karzai is facing political as well as military challenges and is expected to confront the root causes of atomized power, including an opium business that provides more than 60 percent of Afghanistan's gross domestic product. The April 2005 legislative election might be postponed due to a constitutional minimum gender representation requirement for the protection of hundreds of candidates.
