Hungary emerges as base for foreign organised crime groups
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the organized crime groups' transnational activities in Hungary reveals that major groups operating in Hungary are diversifying their trafficking activities and becoming more involved in white-collar crime in an increasingly international setting. Some factors that make Hungary attractive to organized crime groups are discussed.

Cyprus looks to EU membership to end Turkish occupation
Article Abstract:
Cyprus has applied for membership in the European Union, despite the fact that it is a divided country, with 40,000 Turkish troops occupying the northern sector. Turkey objects to the application, because Cyprus would be admitted as one country, without recognigtion of Northren Cyprus.

Hungary has experienced an influx of criminal gangs, with as many as 180 operating within the country, primarily in the Budapest area. The country realizes that it must address the problem if it hopes to gain European Union membership.
