Progress and peril: New counterinsurgency manual cheats on the history exam
Article Abstract:
The final version of Army FM 3-24 "Counterinsurgency" (COIN) manual admits the existence of religious zealots and accepts that some enemies are irreconcilable, and must be killed. Although the new manual will help officers think more incisively about the problems facing them, many of the solutions offered are outdated and dubious, while the doctrine espoused by the manual lies between the failed past and the threatening future.

The case of human intelligence: Our addiction to technology is our greatest weakness
Article Abstract:
The US needs more people who have deep knowledge of the language, culture and politics of nations where it is fighting the global war on terrorism. It is believed that technology such as aerial imagery can be a valuable work, as long one does not subordinate intelligence work to technology.

The Navy is a service, which is out of sight and out of mind in the present wars. Navy is refusing to strip for action and is continuing to add an ever more elaborate superstructure to its twentieth century approach to warfare where net-centric-warfare appears to be far more net than war.
