The economic cart before the political horse
Article Abstract:
The formation of the 11-member European Monetary Union and the launch of the euro currency unit may catalyze European unity but amounts to what an Italian politician called 'putting the economic cart ahead of the political horse.' Economic policy and matters relating to national economies have been prioritized in the process of European integration after political solutions that were proposed in 1952 fell apart. A unified European armed forces could have been a reality in 1954 had France not rejected the idea. However, the vision of a united European army could become a reality within the first half of the 21st century as calls have already been made in 1999 to create such a military force. However, the economy will largely influence any initiative in this direction and

Speakers from 14 countries presented 12 topics during the Undersea Defence Technology Exhibition and Conference Pacific which was held in Sydney, Australia from Feb 24 to 26, 1998. The topics focused mainly on Ship Design and Signature Management, Mine Warfare, Sonar Sensors, Sonar Systems, Weapons and Countermeasures and Training and Simulation. The chief speakers were Vice Admiral C. Barrie, Australia's Vice chief of the Defence Force, Dr R. Brabin-Smith, Australia's Chief Defence Scientist, and H.J. Ohff, Australian Submarine CEO.

Article Abstract:
The impending creation of a European armed forces could spur the consolidation of European aerospace and defense industries. This development is evidenced by France's creation of the European Aerospace and Defence Co, British Aerospace's acquisition of Marconi and the merger of DASA and BAe. It is expected that the creation of European defense conglomerates could result in the increasing similarities in defense equipment which could, in turn, facilitate greater collaboration among armed forces.
