US shipyard consolidations: Why now? Why not? What effect?
Article Abstract:
The consolidations that have taken place in the shipbuilding industry in 1998 has been one of the top business stories in the US. What was formerly referred to as the `Big Six' has been reduced to the `Big Three,' namely General Dynamics, Litton Industries and Newport News Shipyard. Analysts point out that these consolidations are overdue, given the fact that other sectors of the defense industry have already consolidated. The bigger question, however, is the effect of these consolidations on the competitiveness of the indusry as a whole.

U.S. defence industry woes: the mission solution
Article Abstract:
One issue that a panel of experts from the private sector may have given little thought in formulating recommendations to boost the US defense industry is weaponry cost. Although most of the panel's recommendations, particularly changes in export control procedures, are viable, the fact remains that US defense companies are building too many expensive weapon systems that even the richest countries may not afford.
