Clinical trials halted
Article Abstract:
Federal health officials have suspended all government-sponsored clinical trials involving human subjects at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine after a probe indicated that a cancer study there endangered patients' safety. Officials acknowledge that 26 patients have died in the study, which involves the injection of a vaccine into patients who are seriously ill with the deadly skin cancer melanoma. University president David Boren has also set up a task force to ensure that all other non- government-sponsored trials comply with safety regulations.

A case study in how not to conduct a clinical trial
Article Abstract:
The University of Oklahoma quietly shut down a government-sponsored experimental vaccine trial in Apr 2000 that involved patients suffering from the skin cancer melanoma and was being conducted by its College of Medicine. The Health and Human Services Dept (HHSD) shut down all government-sponsored clinical research at the university on Jun 29, 2000. HHSD officials say that the vaccine trial repeatedly violated safety standards and aptly illustrates a case study of how not to conduct a clinical trial.
