A mandate from middle Australia
Article Abstract:
Australian Prime Minister John Howard defied history by winning a reelection while introducing a tax reform package. His victory is more remarkable given the emergence of One Nation Party, which captured 8.4% of vote nationally. The results show that the Coalition is still in touch with middle Australia. The challenges that lie ahead are whether Howard's government can reorganize and govern effectively.

John Howard supporters are accused of being cynical for dropping a campaign in the middle of the Commonwealth Games, football finals, and the Bill Clinton political situation. Many people have already decided how they will vote.
