Airlines see fuel savings soar with new jets
Article Abstract:
Airlines realize more savings despite the soaring prices of fuel due to the modernization of their fleets. TWA and Continental both used less fuel in 3rd qtr 2000 compared to the corresponding period in 1999 even though their fleets flew more miles. The difference in fuel use between new and old jets is staggering. AirTran has achieved 24% more fuel efficiency with its new Boeing 717s that the DC-9s that they replace, a savings that translates to $250 per hour in the air. With the kind of savings that they get from new aircraft, airlines are anxious to update their fleets.
