AmEx card holders raise magazine subscription issue

Holders of American Express' Gold and Platinum credit cards are complaining that they have been billed for magazine subscriptions that they have not ordered. For instance, PGA Tour golfer complains of being charged $49 for SkyGuide. Most of the charges were for periodicals published by American Express Publishing, including Travel & Leisure, Food & Wine and SkyGuide. Executives of the publishing house clarified that they never bill for unordered subscriptions.

Amazon.com Inc is launching five advertisements for the 1999 holiday season to familiarize consumers with online shopping. Created by Foote Cone and Belding in San Francisco, CA, the commercials will each feature a chorus of middle-aged men touting the Amazon shopping experience. The ads, which are targeted mainly to women shoppers, is also seen as a way to present Amazon as a distinctive and inviting Web site.
