FAA orders emergency inspections of stabilizers
Article Abstract:
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered emergency inspections of all horizontal stabilizers on all MD-80 aircraft in the wake of the Alaska Airline flight 261 crash. Investigations showed that the crash was caused by a malfunctioning horizontal stabilizer. Two other MD-80 aircraft belonging to Alaska Airlines were subsequently found to have metallic shavings on a two-in-thick device called a jackscrew which moves the stabilizer up and down. The order affects roughly 1,100 jets operated by domestic airlines.
