Early Snows Leave A Few Optimists In Retailing

The retail industry is facing new challenges from the recent snowstorms that slowed holiday shopping in the Northeast. The storms reduced total sales by 1% and may impact predictions that the retail industry will have a 3% to 5.7% increase over the same period in 2002. Another snowstorm is expected and it could reduce sales even further, up to 4%.

Brand Names Are Paying the Price For a Change in Shopping Trends
Article Abstract:
Holiday shoppers for the 2003 season seem to be more interested in finding what they are looking for at the right price. Brand name products do not seem to be as much of a factor in selecting gifts and other purchases. Wal-Mart and other discounters seem to be the favored targets in catering to shoppers' preferences for good prices.
