Hispanic demographic powers communications market
Article Abstract:
Telecommunications firms are enhancing their strategic thrust to target the rising number of Hispanic customers in the US and Latin America. Already, communications companies are injecting billions of dollars for partnerships or joint ventures to capture the Hispanic market, which in the US is comprised of around 29 million people. Hispanics will also be a major consideration in the Web, which is expected to be 10% Spanish by 2002, according to Telefonica Chairman Juan Villalonga.

Phone, cable firms engage

U S WEST Inc is improving its telephone network so that it can offer Internet access, telephone service and digital television in the Phoenix, AZ, area. The firm is completing market tests on some 500 customers and hopes to offer TV service by spring. Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo has awarded a 30-year contract that gave U S WEST exclusive broadcast rights in Phoenix starting in 2003.
