Big Tobacco backs down

JTI-Macdonald Corp. and Imperial Tobacco have reversed long-held positions and promised Canadian lawmakers to halt advertisements that target teenagers. Cigarette manufacturers will support a new tax law that raises the price of cigarettes to fund a $360 million effort for government anti-smoking programs.

Activists disrupt Rothmans meeting
Article Abstract:
Toronto, Ont.-based Rothmans Inc., which is led by chairman William Kelly, was picketed by members of the anti-smoking group, Non-Smokers' Rights Association. Rothmans, along with other tobacco firms, is under investigation for allegations that it participated in a cigarette smuggling scheme.
