Corel redraws its future
Article Abstract:
Corel Corp. (Ottawa) is trying to reinvent itself to ensure its long-term future after it had amicably terminated its $1.1-billion (US) merger deal with Inprise/Borland Corp. The deal was supposed to boost Corel's plan to become the dominant player in the Linux market, which is seeing strong growth as computer users seek more robust, cheaper alternatives to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system. Despite the deal's collapse, Corel is well positioned to benefit from its huge investment to make Linux-based versions of its software. More than two million copies of Corel's WordPerfect software and 200,000 copies of its Linux operating system have been downloaded from the Internet for free. The challenge for Corel is how to make people pay for these products. Corel restructuring strategy also includes a plan to reduce its annual costs by $40-million.
