'Wave of future' cancer pill OK'd

Novartis Pharmaceutical has received FDA approval for its Gleevec product, indicated for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia, which afflicts 5,000 people each year in the US. Experts hailed the approval of Gleevec, the first of a new generation of anti-cancer drugs, which could also possibly be used against a form of stomach cancer, small-cell lung cancer, prostate cancer and brain tumors. The drug has milder side effects than chemotherapy, notably low white and red blood cell counts, fluid retention and nausea.

DNA microchip detects cancer types
Article Abstract:
Researchers at Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, MA, used DNA microchips to detect two types of leukemia in a trial test. It marks the first time that DNA microchips are used as precision diagnostic tools. The microchips, which are primarilly pieces of etched glass layered with genes or pieces of genes, interact in specific ways with the DNA of whatever material is placed on them.
