Deals by rivals could be AOL's wake-up call
Article Abstract:
America Online (AOL) faces new competition for online dominance with AT&T's entry into high-speed Internet access and Walt Disney and NBC's new stakes in the Web site market. AT&T will gain control of oHome, Tele-Communications Inc. 's (TCI) hookup service that offers high-speed Internet access, when it merges with TCI. Disney recently acquired a stake in Web search engine Infoseek while NBC partnered with CNET and its Snap unit. Some analysts say AOL must tie-up with phone networks, WorldCom, GTE and Sprint, to provide high-speed Internet access.

Palm devices suffer little damage in virus-like attack
Article Abstract:
Some Palm devices have been infected for the first time by a virus-like program, called Crack 1.1, which marks the beginning of the handheld virus era. The malicious software, which did little damage and has been virtually wiped out, demonstrates the vulnerability of personal digital assistants to viruses and the likelihood that it will encourage copycats. A bigger consideration is that the virus incident undercuts the view that handhelds are too simple to be contaminated.

Net, wireless phone titans gird for battle
Article Abstract:
Wireless telephone carriers and Internet service providers are fighting for the control of Internet commerce and content on wireless telephones. Carriers boast that they are best suited to provide the new service because they are familiar with their equipment. On the other hand, Web portals claim that they are well-positioned to offer the service to customers who will want to extend their existing e-mail, calendar and other accounts to mobile telephones.
