Digital TV era still remains out of reach; few consumers adopt costly new technology

Introduced with much fanfare in 1998, digital television has yet to significantly effect the consumer electronics market. Confusion and haggling in the industry have contributed to consumer disaffection. Although only 230,000 digital television monitors have been sold, FCC rules currently call for all TV broadcasting to be on digital channels by the year 2006.
