AT&T launches biggest IPO today

AT and T Corp's wireless business will launch the biggest initial public offering (IPO) in US history on Apr 27, 2000. The tracking stock, which will use the Symbol AWE, will open at $29.50 per share and is expected to raise as much as $10.2 billion to $12.2 billion for the company. AT and T, which will release from 360 million to 414 million shares of the wireless unit, is expected to have a first-day gain of only 10% because of the large number of shares being offered.

Digital phone service routs analog

The digital wireless services have cornered 50% of the wireless telephone market in just more than four years from 1996-2000. Underlining this trend is the addition of 831,000 new customers to Sprint PCS in 1st qtr 2000, surpassing the 711,000 customers expected by analysts. Likewise, AT&T, Nextel Communications Inc and the regional Bells are predicted to report strong digital subscriber growth. Consulting firm Strategis Group forecasts that by 2004 digital will account for 92% of the wireless telephone market.

AT&T makes Net portable, free

AT and T Wireless Group has introduced PocketNet, a new consumer wireless Web service that offers free access to as many as 40 Internet sites and sevices. The service, which can also include fax, calendar, e-mail, to-do lists, surfing and contact lists, is aimed at capturing market share that the company has lost to its rivals. AT and T's PocketNet service is expected to force other carriers to offer flat, unlimited rates for access to the Internet.
