Dismantling a Wall Street Club
Article Abstract:
Merrill Lynch CEO E. Stanley O'Neal offers a sharp management style to his predecessor David Komansky. As the first African American to head a major Wall Street firm and a director of the New York Stock Exchange, he has every right to flourish under the banner of memberships in the most exclusive financial clubs in the country, but O'Neal prefers to concentrate on what is good for his entire community. Former Merrill executive Winthrop H. Smith Jr., son of one of the firm's founders, is not sure O'Neal is the right man for the job and is a public critic of O'Neal's cost-cutting strategies. Smith prefers the club mentality that emphasizes growth through aggressive expansion activity.
