FTC urges Web privacy law; passage unlikely
Article Abstract:
The Federal Trade Commission's recommendation that Congress should pass a law regulating online privacy was not warmly received by legislators. Legislators, however, agreed that a law would be needed in the future to integrate state rules on online privacy. The FTC noted as part of its recommendation that Web sites should be restricted as to how they use the information which they collect from consumers through surveys and software which are able to track consumer preferences.

FTC not likely to force AOL's instant messaging open
Article Abstract:
Sources familiar with America Online's proposed merger with Time Warner say that the FTC is not likely to compel AOL to open up its dominant instant-messaging service to competitors. Some government officials concede that AOL's Instant Messenger is considered an "information service" rather than an "telecommunications service." Another factor is that AOL's instant messaging service is provided free and therefore has no business "market."
