Fat-free chips: too good to be true?
Article Abstract:
Concerns over the possible side-effects of potato chips fried in Olestra is keeping the product from being approved in Canada. Olestra, a synthetic fat manufactured by Procter & Gamble Co. and already approved by US food regulators, has promised consumers the taste of fat without the deposits that can clog the arteries because it is not digested by the body. However, the product's potential side-effect, such as cramps and diarrhea, and its nutritional impact has caused Health Canada to delay its approval of the Olestra-laden chips.
