Fiber-optics firms strike a $41B deal
Article Abstract:
JDS Uniphase has signed a definitive agreement to acquire rival SDL for $41 billion in stock. If the merger is completed, fewer companies will control the rapidly-growing fiber optic components market. JDS Uniphase is attempting to become one of the very few firms that manufacture all the hardware that go into fiber optic pump modules. These models amplify light carrying data signals over fiber optic lines, thus enabling them to travel farther. However, JDS has attracted that attention of regulators as it has already acquired 17 rivals since the mid-1990s.
