Microsoft mediation talks sputter as deadline looms
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp's antitrust lawsuit will be back in the hands of Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson on Feb 22, 2000, the unofficial deadline set for the settlement of the case. Despite the absence of positive results from the mediation efforts by Judge Richard Posner, however, some industry observers believe that a deal is still possible within the coming weeks. Microsoft had earlier countered the government's plan to breakup up the software firm with an offer of limited conduct restrictions.

Congress takes sides on Microsoft ruling
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Corp's antitrust case has gone beyond the courtroom to the US Congress. Assistant Attorney General Joel Klein has been branded by a number of lawmakers as a 'frontman' for competitors of the software firm after Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ruled that the company was guilty of using its near-monopoly of the Windows operating system to stifle competition. Klein, who led the prosecution in the Microsoft case, reiterated that the harm done by the practice lies in what consumers failed to receive.
