Firestone lays off 450 at Illinois plant
Article Abstract:
Bridgestone/Firestone Inc announced on Oct 17, 2000 that it would indefinitely lay off 450 employees at its plant in Decatur, IL, and reduce production at two other factories. The announcement, which was made as the number of deaths linked to the company's tires continues to rise, is seen as a response to declining demand for Firestone tires and too much inventory. The Decatur factory has been identified as the main source of the tires in question that Firestone recalled on Aug 9, 2000 owing to tread separations.

Customers clamor for non-Firestone tires
Article Abstract:
Consumers are shunning Firestone tires and opting for other brands to replace their recalled tires. Some consumers are even replacing their firestone tires even if their existing tires are not part of the company's recall. Firestone officially announced a recall of 6.5 million P235/75R-15 size ATX and ATX II tires built at Firestone plants nationwide, and Wilderness AT tires from its Decatur, IL, plant. At least 62 deaths may be connected to the recalled tires.
